Department for Mechanical Constructions and Mechanization

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Kragujevac began to work as a department of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from Belgrade, in October 1960, at Construction department for students of the first level of studies. Later, the graded studies were abolished, but the Construction major had always existed.

With the change in curriculum, an idea about the need to open a new department that would educate graduated engineers constructors of general profile had matured. Response of the economy has been very favourable. In 1978, a decision was made to form the Department for mechanical constructions at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Kragujevac.

The Department took care of introduction of modern scientific methods and achievements in education at courses belonging to it, of creation of scientific-teaching staff and of development of scientific-research work and considered all the questions about implementation of curriculum and the giving of teaching.

Scientific-research activity and practical exercise for students of the Department for mechanical construction (later, the name "department" changed in "major") were performed in:

  • Laboratory for machine elements and mechanisms,
  • Laboratory for automation and pneumatics,
  • Construction-development bureau.

From the beginning until today, this Major was in the centre of interest and had the greatest number of students. The present name of the major is "Mechanical constructions and mechanization", the same as the name of the Department.

Today, the Major for mechanical constructions and mechanization (Department) represents a major with very powerful personnel with, undoubtedly, significant potential, that achieves significant results in teaching and science (6 full professors, 1 associate professor, 1 assistant professor, 6 senior teaching assistants and 3 junior teaching assistants).

Teachers and associates of this Department are, in addition to regular classes at basic studies and classes at post-graduate studies, directly engaged in research, through scientific-research projects financed by the Ministry of Science and environmental protection of the Republic of Serbia, and then through direct cooperation with the economy, cooperation with other scientific-research institutions in the country and abroad and through participation in numerous scientific conferences, symposiums, congresses in the country and abroad.

A large number of teachers has acquired their scientific title by advancement or schooling abroad in: the United States (Harvard, St. Louis), Germany (Berlin, Achen, Munich, Dresden and Braunschweig), France (Paris), Poland (Warszava), Great Britain (Birmingham), Czech Republic (Praha, Brno).

Today, there are several sub-majors at the Major for mechanical constructions and mechanization:

  1. General mechanical constructions
  2. Mechanization
  3. CAD - Computer aided design
  4. Design of agricultural machines and equipment
  5. Design of machines and equipment in the food industry

Throughout the time, the following disciplines were cherished: Technical drawing with descriptive geometry, Materials strength, Machine elements and Elements of design, that are common for all majors, as well as disciplines, that "colour" the educational major "Mechanical construction and mechanization", like: The theory of elasticity, Mechanisms, Transport devices and machines, Mechanical transmission, Machine dynamics, Reliability of mechanical constructions, Tribology of machine systems, Testing of mechanical constructions, Metal structures, design methods, calculation of mechanical constructions, Internal transport devices, etc.

There are two laboratories at the Department , today:

  • Laboratory for mechanical constructions and mechanization
  • CAD laboratory

laboratorijalaboratorija

Also, there are two scientific-research centres:

  • Centre for testing of mechanical transmissions (CIMP)
  • Centre for testing and calculation of machine elements and machine systems (CIPMES)

The Major for mechanical constructions and mechanization prepares the experts for a number of activities in machine industry, from idea to realization of certain product. Knowledge necessary for work in interdisciplinary teams and also in the field of innovation, research, design, independent businesses, consulting, management, informatics, etc., is acquired. Through teaching plans and curriculum, new demands in accordance with the Bologna Declaration and the demands of the wider environment are met. Forthcoming is the engagement on the harmonisation of plans and curriculum with new trends in science and technology, on the study efficiency, on possibilities for shortening the studies and enhancing the quality, on development of new sub-majors, on the introduction of IT content in all disciplines of the Major, on the adoption and application of new scientific and didactics methods and on full responsibility of teaching staff towards students, the economy and the community.

As a part of the reform of curriculum and teaching programs, the Department for mechanical constructions and mechanization has adopted curriculum and programs for:

  • three-year vocational studies,

on two educational majors:

  • Mechanical constructions and mechanization
  • Typographic machines and graphics design

Head of the Department: Dr Nenad Marjanovic, professor
